The long awaited inquiry on the construction industry in Quebec has begun and we shall see how many politician will sweat in the coming months. In the mean time I saw this particular wall last spring had a chuckle...

Street art, the cycles of renewal and decay... Montreal

Sunday 20 May 2012

Toronto was my home for over 30 years and now home for two of my adult children. The city still holds a special place in my heart, and I for one, do not subscribe to the unfair, unhelpful and oddly Canadian unity idea of hatred for Toronto outside the city. I love the energy and amazing diversity of the city. Toronto is one of the worlds great 'Arc' cities where most of the world's languages and cultures have some representation.
Walking the city is one of one of my great pleasures, especially as driving the city is not.

Montreal is on of my favorite cities and in the 5 years my daughter lived there I was able to visit every 6 months. Street art in Montreal, like it's urban culture, is unique. And Montreal being much older then Vancouver, has a much more dignified and dare I say,' beautiful', rate of urban decay and renewal. In Vancouver if you are away for a week something is bound to be gone by the time you return.
This wall is near Rue St Laurent and Rue Ste. Catherines... and I can't image it being in any other city in Canada...

Since Bansky started using the urban landscape as the back ground (or the gesso ) for his art there seems to have been an explosion of painted walls every where. Vancouver is no exception. But what is great about this movement is that it appears to be so fluid as new artists add their personal layers upon others and city officials battle to blot it out and new work appears over night...
I love to mine this rich tapestry and how we inter react with it.

Mother's day is over and now on to daily living, yet not forgetting the reason for the day in the first place.
Moving on... but thanks to Olla Flower's contribution to our urban landscape!

Today is a beautiful day in Vancouver with a string of more glorious days to come. And a day perfectly suited to more petal moments from Olla Flowers on Cambie Street...

Almost everyday just down the street from our office there is a wonderful urban moment. Strewn on the side walk are flower petals, yellow, red and much more, lying there amongst the flotsam of every day street life. For the last while it has been a favourite lingering spot and for the next week I will post some of the results. For a beautiful flower shop and floral designs for all occasions contact; Megan at Olla Flowers, 235 Cambie Street, 604-609-6552

The oddest ship I have ever seen sat in the harbour for a couple of weeks to take on cargo. The cargo? Other ships bound for a scrap yard in China, and the curious on the seabus loved it!
